Yamdrok lake trekking is one of the best short treks in Tibet and it offers you the most important religious sites in Tibet which are Drepung and Sera monasteries in Lhasa and the most famous Palace of the Potala and Jokang temple.
Both of them are the world’s heritage site. After three days of sightseeing in Lhasa and slowly getting acclimatized to the high altitude of Tibet, the Tibet trekking continue to the southern part of Lhasa through Gongkar county. Gongkar county is located on the banks of the Barhmaputra at a point where the river valley is at its widest, which is why Gongkar airport was constructed.
From Gongkar county, you will continue your Tibet trekking towards eastwards as far as the Dol valley on the south bank of the Barhmaputra, driving through very beautiful and traditional styled Tibetan villages of Jidishol and Namgyel shol surrounded by their beautiful barley fertile lands. When you reach the first campsite at Langthang Dewachen, you will visit a Tibetan family and communicate with local people to get more deeper and authentic experience of your Tibet trek.
Tibet trek from Langthang Dewachen to Yamdrok lake will give you a chance to see the less visited villages and towns, remote and isolated monasteries, different wild animals including blue sheep, wolves, foxes, antelope and flocks of Yak and sheep. Crossing the Jeshul La pass at the elevation of over 5000 m is another challenging and exciting day. From the top of the pass, you will have a very beautiful view of eastern arm of Yamdrok lake and the Kurla kangri snow covered mountain which is bordered to Tibet and Bhutan.
Full days trek to Yamdrok lake and tremendously beautiful overnight camp at the Yamdrok lake shore, you will take a loop tour around Yamdrok lake and enjoy the most beautiful view of Yamdrok lake, beautiful villages, grassland, nomad camp, Noejin Kangsang snow-capped mountain and finally drive back to Lhasa.
Day 01: Arrival at Liwu train station and transfer to Lhasa
You will be warmly welcome by our Tibetan guide and driver and accompany you to the holy city of Lhasa along with the view of Kyichu river and Potala Palace in the distance.
Day 02: Sight seeing Lhasa Jokang temple, Bharkor & Summer Palace
After Breakfast, you will start from the hotel and visit Jokang temple. Jokang temple is the oldest temple of Tibet which was built by King Songtsan Gampo in the 7th century and it is housed to the most sacred statue of Bhudha Shakyamuni brought from mainland China by the princess Wangchen of the Tang court. Walking around the Bharkor is another interesting thing during your tour in lhasa. You will meet many different people in Bharkor. Afternoon, visit Summer Palace, known as Norbu Lingka In Tibetan and walk inside the park of the summer palace.
Day 03: Sight seeing Lhasa, Potala Palace and Sera monastery

Drive towards Potala square. Leave the car behind and must be ready and take your challenge to climb more than hundred steps of the Potala Palance. The Potala Palace was originally built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsan Gampo but the one to the present size was expended by the 5th Dalaia Lama. It has thirteen storey’s high with more than a thousand rooms and divided with White and Red Palace.
After the sightseeing of the Potala Palace, walk around the Potala Palace with pilgrimages and you can experience the ancient tradition of Tibetans, walking around Potala, praying matras. The Kora takes you around 40 minutes. It is also good to acclimatize to the high altitude. After lunch, you will drive to Sera Monastery, depending on availability, make your own prayer flag at Sera’s printing center and witness monks debate age-old scripts in the courtyard.
You will do a short hike or Kora in Tibetan around Sera monastery with Tibetan pilgrims. The Sera Kora not only help you to acclimatize to the altitude and prepare for your Tibet trekking but also gives you more localized and authentic experience by being with locals and walking with locals around the monastery.
Day 04: Drive Lhasa-Drathang fresco-Langthang Dewachen(3900mts/165Km)
After breakfast, travel from Lhasa to Yamdrok trekking and drive along the Lhasa river and through the tunnel towards south, Lhoka in Tibetan and continues journey along the YarlungTsangpo and some beautiful villages of Lhoka and reach Dranang county after one and half hours drive. The road condition for today is very good. Danangcounty is one of the biggest farming land counties of Tsetang or Lhoka where people grow barley, wheat, beans, potatoes and many other vegetables.
Drathang Fresco is located in Dranangcounty and the reason why we come to visit the fresco here is because firstly it is less tourist discovered monastery and secondly, you will be amazed by the art work between 12-15th century. The monastery was built in the 11th century by DasrkpaNgonshe, a native Dranang of Dranang valley and one of the 13 saints associated with it and completed in the end of the 11th century by his nephews. Even though the painting in the main assembly hall has little damage in the cultural revolution, it still has preserved lots of beautiful unique wall painting there.
The painting is in Tibetan, Newari and Indian styles. After visiting Drathangfresco, continues the journey and until reaching Chedishol, the road condition is very good, from Chedishol, turn left and drive on a narrow paved road at the distance of 25km. The journey is full of beautiful and fascinating scenery.
Day 05: Trek-Langthang Dewachen–Eagle nest-Lhamachen (4800mts/6 hrs)
After the breakfast, trek along the villages of Kangon and Jiekang for half an hour and then cross a small bridge and trek through small gorge until getting to the herders camp. From the herders camp, turn in the left valley and walktowards the eagle nest.
Have lunch at eagle nest and continuously trek steep up in the valley and can be seen many blue sheep, snow chicken, foxes, wolves. According to many of our clients feedback, since it is rocky trail, it is a great fun to have a competition of making rock piles during the lunch time. As long as you can build the tallest rock pile like Mani stone which you can see on the top of many big passes, you will be the championship and gain some presents.
Day 06: Lhemachen-JeshulLa-Kangru monastery-Yamdrok lake

Start the trek after breakfast and ascend the side way to Jeshul La Pass(5000mts). Reaching the top of the pass after 3 hrs walk, enjoy the most beautiful view of Yamdroklake and KurlaGangri which is located at the border between Tibet and Bhutan. Descend down to the herders camp and have lunch.
There you can sometimes see herders, making their lunch at the campsite. Reach Kangru monastery after an hour walk and it is very interesting to spend the night nearby the monastery and you can sit with the monks and share their life experience. Kangru monastery has more than several hundred years history but the small monastery that we can today is a complete new monastery and there are around 13 monks and 10 nuns.
Continue Trekking within the beautiful villages of Kangru and Kangmar, taking photos of the villages people who are indeed in Tibetan traditional dress being not effected by the modern lives. You can really enjoy the beauty of Tibetan culture and their way of daily lives resembled the one in the olden days. The campsite on the huge green grassland called Renpoesure beside the lake shore is one of the most memorable one with many horses, Yaks and sheep being grazed on it. one in the olden days. Day 07: Darktso-Taglung monastery-Samding monastery-Gampala pass-Lhasa

Meet our drivers here and say good bye to our camping crews and start the adventure driving journey after long time adventure walk. You will be driving along the Yamdrok lake and reach Taglungtownship. Taglung is the largest market town between Gyangtse and Lhodark and the site of an important summer trade fair attended sometimes by Bhutanese merchants from Bumthang as well as native Tibetans from Tsang region and Lhoka. Stop there for visiting Taglung monastery. It several hundred years of history and it was the branch monastery of Dorje dark. Nowadays, there is one main assembly hall dominated by a huge Guru Rinpoche statue and some beautiful wall painting dates back to the 15th to 19th century.
After visiting the monastery, we will continue our journey towards Lhasa. After around 20Km distance drive, you will reach Samding monastery. Visit Samding monastery and then get to the point where the main road to Gyantse and back to Lhasa.
You will continue your Tibet tour towards Lhasa along the west arm of Yamdrok lake after Nakartse county, cross Gampala pass, enjoy the most beautiful view of Noejin kangsang snow-covered mountain and Yamdrok lake to the south and great Barhmaputra or Yarlung Tsangpo valley to the north of the pass. Driving through many zigzags and passing by beautiful Chushul village and county capital with their beautiful green fertile land, finally you will reach holy Lhasa city.
Day 08 Depart Lhasa
After breakfast, drive through the Kyichu valley and get to Lhasa airport at the distance of 45km and fly home.
