Unrivaled natural beauty, spirituality and cultural pursuits

With endless hiking and biking trails, ancient traditions still intact and impressive architectural marvels to explore, there is something for every traveler to Bhutan.

Reconnect With Nature

When in Gangtey, start your day with an exhilarating ride across the valley by mountain bike to the village of Nimphay, home to a number of the lodge’s hosts. As buckwheat is one of the major crops here, you can relish a delicious buckwheat-themed breakfast or lunch with pancakes and momos made from the nutritious seed as you take in panoramic views of the valley’s pristine natural beauty.

Back home at the lodge, visit the Black-necked Crane Conservation Center nearby to learn more about the rare and majestic birds which the area is famed for. The Bhutanese believe the cranes are sacred and bring blessings for the harvest season. Afterwards, participate in a fire purification ceremony called Riwo Sangcho. This ritual combines the offerings of sang (smoke), sur (smell) and jinsek (flame). The combination of smoke, smell and flame purifies the mind, body and spirit and helps to dispel any negative energies. The ceremony is believed to be one of the most powerful practices to gain merit for the living and deceased.

Reconnect With Others

While visiting Punakha, hike across the valley’s lush rice fields past traditional farmhouses and join local children on their way to school. Some shy, some cheeky, they’ll be very happy sharing their walk to school with you. Continue climbing through the forest to arrive above the clouds in time for a traditional vegetarian breakfast with the 50 young resident monks of the monastery. Afterwards, you might enjoy interacting with some of them as they play volleyball or attend English class or take a tour with the Lama to explore the monastery’s history.

Complete your morning back at the lodge with a mandala offering ceremony. This offering is a powerful method for accumulating extensive merit in a short time. When your mind starts to wander simply refocus on the beauty of the mandala that you are creating with your GEM. Mandala meditations can assist in bringing inner transformation and are often used in Buddhist ceremonies.

Rituals

When entering each lodge for the first time, your GEM will present you with a ‘khadar,’ a traditional scarf printed with sacred symbols, to mark your arrival. The khadar varies in color from lodge to lodge and each carries an important meaning, linked to the chant of a Buddhist mantra to promote positivity and protection for your journey.

Throughout your stay you will be guided in auspicious Buddhist practices to gain merit and dispel bad karma. In Thimphu, as your set your intentions for your journey, your GEM will assist you in offering a butter lamp at the lodge’s Prayer Pavilion, surrounded by meditative reflecting ponds. In Punakha you may perform a mandala offering ceremony to hone your concentration and to bring awareness to the importance of living in the moment.

At Six Senses Gangtey, offer a purifying fire puja to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions and the Tantric deities as a way of letting go of the past and creating space for a fresh start, while in Bumthang, you can join our team in printing your own prayer flags using hand carved wooden blocks to hang in a clean, peaceful location in the pine forests surrounding the lodge. Prayer flags are typically raised outside homes, hung on bridges, hilltops and in places of spiritual importance. When the wind blows, it carries away the prayers on the flag, blessing all beings.

Before ending your stay in Paro, you’ll be invited to join a blessing ceremony performed by monks at a 15th century monastery located just steps from the lodge. When it is time to depart, your GEM will tie a colored sungkey (blessed cord) around your wrist while reciting a mantra to bid you a safe onward journey. You may wear this cord to keep you safe and to bring good luck long after you have left the Kingdom.
